Jartan - a young, fifteen-year-old human boy - has just become a paladin. But his recently acquired rank within the noble and powerful paladinhood is one of desperation, and not ability. For an evil wizard of diabolical intelligence and frightening power, along with his demonic son who can transform himself into fantastic creatures of tremendous power and destruction, are planning to unleash a great horror upon the many lands - and Jartan is the only one in a position to stop them. But the boy has nowhere near the maturity, experience, and power for such a daunting and virtually suicidal task. Only an enigmatic wizard with a twisted and troubled past has the knowledge the novice paladin desperately needs. But this sorcerer has his own agenda - and can just as easily kill Jartan, as help him.
The unlikely hero must overcome many challenges in his dangerous adventure. An abysmal swamp that is host to nefarious denizens, the village of forest elves, a library of evil knowledge, and the imposing Undead Forest are only a few of the deadly perils encountered during his travels. But these are nothing compared to what lies ahead, for Jartan finds the journey through the foreboding Underworld an absolute hell. It is an odious realm of darkness where lethal barriers, diabolical traps, and powerful creatures await those foolish enough to venture into the infernal depths. The four 'Caverns of Death' the overwhelmed and underpowered teen must pass is only one of the near impossible obstacles he faces, culminating in the lair of the great diamond dragon - and the gods made certain that nothing gets past the dragon.
