Shri Gusway's world is upended when Marv Rinal reveals the secret of his heritage. Rinal professes his love for Gusway and asks her to become his partner. If she accepts, she must live on his homeworld of Baen, leaving Vanguard and the life she always wanted. Gusway chafes in Rinal's world of privilege and protocol but is driven by her love.
Baen is gripped by social turmoil, with the future of the planetary government in doubt. Rinal's return with a Wylin partner exacerbates the divisions, giving his family's critics a new target to focus their anger on.
When the couple embarks on a tour of Rinal's homeworld, their adversaries begin a media assault against Gusway. The verbal assaults lead to physical violence, forcing them to leave Baen.
